The Word on the Street 2007
On
the last weekend of every September, Toronto's Queen’s Park
transforms into a reader’s utopia for the annual “Word on
the Street” book and magazine festival.
 The
event simultaneously takes place in Calgary, Kitchener and Vancouver,
with the Halifax festival running one week earlier. Though the
literary celebration originally was held right on Queen’s Street,
it expanded so much over the years that in 2004 it was necessary to
move to Queen’s Park, offering visitors a more peaceful setting
and the perfect place to read under a tree or on a park bench.
This
year the weather was ideal for the thousands of visitors to the event,
who were able to browse more than 250 book, magazine and literacy
exhibitor booths in the festival marketplace. They were also offered
the chance to meet and chat with any of the 170 Canadian authors,
poets, storytellers, performers and industry experts featured at booths
and performance venues around the park. Workshops for aspiring writers
were also available. People from all walks of life were attracted by an
infinite variety and selection of reading material, offering something
for every age and taste.
